Trashtag Challenge Bhutan – A Small Nation, Big Impact
They say, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” and the Trashtag Challenge proves just that. Originally started in the U.S. in 2015 by Reinhold and his friend John Heyward after accidentally littering a receipt, the challenge encouraged people to clean up 100 pieces of trash. Fast forward to 2019, and the challenge exploded online, turning into a viral movement with over 26,000 posts using the hashtag #trashtag.

What Sparked the Movement in Bhutan?
On March 30 and 31, 2019, Bhutan took part in the global campaign with full force. Over 2,000 volunteers participated in a countrywide clean-up event called the Mega Trash Challenge. It was organized by environmentalist Namgyel Wangchuk who said, “Once it was posted on Facebook, messages started to pop up one after another. The motivational factor was the desire to be a part of something big and positive.”

Bhutan’s Youth Embrace the Trashtag Spirit
What makes Trashtag Challenge Bhutan truly powerful is the way it resonated with the country’s youth. Students, hikers, and entire communities came together to clean their towns, forests, and riversides. Inspired by each other’s social media posts, small local clean-ups became viral, motivating others to do the same.
This challenge, unlike many other viral trends, spreads positivity, teamwork, and even patriotism. And it all began with something as simple as trash.

The momentum hasn’t stopped. With every new post, every local clean-up, and every shared story, Bhutan continues to prove that environmental awareness doesn’t need millions of dollars—just one good idea and a community willing to act.
We at Ambo Tours believe that this movement will continue to grow. We hope more youth will join the cause, transforming Bhutan and the world into a cleaner, happier place.
After all, who would have thought that trash could inspire change?
